You get them in your Inbox or Spam folder almost every day. Offers that claim they will help you make bagfuls of money FAST without raising a sweat. Some of them add icing to the cake by telling you that you could make so much money you could “fire your boss” and spend the rest of your life “living it up” in some exotic place in the Caribbean!
The senders of those emails obviously make money, or else they won’t be sending them! But have you stopped to think why such scams are flooding the Internet?
Most such scamsters understand the human psyche. They have grasped the underlying principle that people, in general, can be manipulated by playing upon some basic motives such need, fear, envy and greed.
Let’s take a look at ‘need’ first: The present economic scenario has a lot of people either jobless or employed in poorly paying jobs. Many have to work at two [or even three] jobs just to meet basic expenses, let alone pay off mortgages or debt incurred. If offered a chance to earn a sizable income, that too very quickly, who wouldn’t grab the chance?
‘Fear’ is another emotion that is preyed upon. The “What if?” question never seems to find an answer. What if I lose my job? What if a family member or I myself get some life-threatening or debilitating disease that will involve expensive treatment? What if someone in the family meets with an accident? What if….? To counter the eventualities of the “What if…?” questions, most of us would like to have a tidy sum set aside for such eventualities. However, no one has been really able to answer the question: How much is enough?
‘Envy’ is another emotion that can be used by scamsters to promote their schemes. America seems to be in a game of one-upmanship to have the biggest and the best. The need to keep up with the Joneses has fattened the bank accounts of many crooks.
‘Greed’ is yet another emotion these scamsters exploit. The “Greed is good” philosophy is almost everywhere now. How many of us can put our hands on our hearts and truthfully say, “We are content with what we have”? It is part of our psyche to want more and more and more and more. The more we have, the more we want! If we can get more with little or no effort or expense, so much the better for us!
Let’s get it clear: it is NOT possible to get rich fast, unless through some illegal or dubious means. Yes, a few lucky people HAVE STRUCK IT RICH by winning fantastic sums in a lottery and so on, but note those key words, FEW and LUCKY. For those FEW and LUCKY persons to strike it rich, literally THOUSANDS of others had to part with their money, no matter how small the price of a lottery ticket, etc.
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK! Even the get-rich-quick scamsters have to WORK hard to send those scam emails!
