Web Site Flipping: Sell your unused web properties or continue losing money
Online entrepreneurs love to buy web properties; whether they are domain names, blogs, forums, twitter accounts … you name it. I remember when there was a huge craze about it; everyone was all about flipping web sites. Flipping web properties essentially means buying a web site for less, building it up, and then selling it for profit.
I knew what had to be done in order to make money flipping web sites, and I was all about it. Just like a lot of people out there, I also bought few web properties back when the craze of web site flipping was at its peak. I bought about 5 web sites that were WordPress blogs and were ranked high on Google page rank.
Websites that I purchased ranged in niches from Anime to Halloween decorating ideas. All I had to do was polish up the SEO (search engine optimization) and continue adding fresh content to my sites to jump up in Google page rank. While doing that I could make money via Adsense on those sites and then sell them off for profit.
I had it all planned out; everything was going good for a couple of months, I was adding new content and visitors were coming in and commenting frequently. What I didn’t plan on is my lack of interest in those niches. I really don’t care much about Anime, and I really don’t give a damn about Halloween decorating ideas, until it’s the day of Halloween … but to blog about it all few times a week was just too much. I was more interested in the progression of My Time Matters Blog, and granted I’ve put most of my time into it. Therefore I was doing absolutely nothing to my other 5 sites that I purchased during that web site flipping craze.
All the purchased sites that I now had were losing their position on Google, which means I wasn’t making as much money off of ads. It’s also been over a year since I’ve had those sites and I begun to lose money due to hosting and domain renewal fees. At this point, I just wanted those liabilities removed.
Long story short, I ended up selling all those sites just a few weeks back on Flippa.com. Granted, those were some costly lessons but the knowledge and experience will always prevail. On the other hand, those individuals that purchased these web properties from me can now provide content to people interested in those niches. This way these sites can continue to grow and produce content by those individuals that are genuinely interested in those topics. In doing so, they attract good traffic and can continue making profit. My loss, their gain.
Key Points:
- Purchase web properties that you are interested in. If you are only interested in money then be prepared to spend even more money.
- Don’t overload yourself with unnecessary work. One site can make as much money as hundreds of them, if taken care of properly. Do your research and start small.
- Pick a niche that you are passionate about. There are thousands upon thousands of niches that will make you money. However, if you lack the drive of continually pushing forward towards progression then you’ll need to cut your losses as fast as possible and move on to another niche.
