Reincarnation Continued – the Soul and its Nature

In last post we talked about reincarnation, and the post also contained 2 links to a video about a child who remembers that he was a soldier in his last life and died during world war in an air crash. Hope, some of you would have taken some time out to look at this very interesting video, which for open minded people; is a prove enough that we are born again and death is nothing but a change – the change of body.

Now we take our discussion further from there. If you think you believe in reincarnation, then you would have to accept the existence of soul, the indestructible entity; and once you accept the existence of soul, you will start appreciating the supersoul more and more. But it would be next step of course. In this post, we will focus on the existence of soul. Remember, only a person with open mind can appreciate these topics. So I request everyone reading this to remain open minded so that you can appreciate the point I am trying to make here.

I remember a very interesting incident, which happened some years back. A great saintly person from the East who was travelling to Western world on a preaching mission once had his program in a school. During his discourse he came to the topic that how we are different from this body. He called one of the students, and pointing to his arm he asked: what is this? The boy innocently answered, “this is my arm”. The saint said, so this is your arm, and then he pointed towards his leg, and asked “what is this”, and boy again answered, “this is my leg”. This way he kept asking him about different parts of his body and then he finally pointed to his body and asked, “what is this?”, and the boy said, “this is my body”. Now the saint raised this question, so this is your arm, this is your leg, these are your eyes, and finally this is your body, but who are you? You say this is your body; that means the body belongs to you, but then who is the owner? The boy didn’t have an answer. As a matter of fact, if we think carefully, none of us would be able to answer this question.

Some people say that we are not this body, but we are the mind. If it was true, and we were the mind – then we should have been in the control. Then why does the mind control us? And mind controls whom? We just said that we are the owner of the body but not the body itself, and we are also not the mind, then who we are? We are actually a soul, the most conscious entity. The body works because of the presence of soul. When the soul leaves the body, it dies. When we say the body is dead, the body is still present; it has eyes but it cannot see; similarly it has ears, but it cannot hear and it has all other limbs, but none of them can function anymore. Why were they functioning few minutes back, but are not functioning anymore?

We can compare the body to be a car. When a car is moving, it means that there is a driver. He might not be visible because of dark windows, but any person who has intelligence will know that if car is moving that means it has a driver. Only a small child, who has yet to develop this intelligence, will think that the car is moving on its own.

Thus, when we see a body moving and working, we can understand that there is a driver inside in the form of soul and when the driver leaves, the body would be dead.

To quote one verse from Bhagavad Gita, the holiest book for Hindus, “The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.”

We will continue about the nature of the soul in next post.

  1. I believe in reincarnation and I looked at the videos too. I wonder if people can still find some excuse that this video is not right or if everything finishes with death.
    Thanks for the informative post.

  2. I love reading about stuff like this and do have an open mind to it but I do wonder about it in so much as:

If reincarnation is to take place and we have no memory of a past life then that means we are either on our first visit here or we are not able to remember our last visit.

If we are on our first visit then we will become more enlightened next time round but if we forget the past visits then its more like recycling in so much as we are not going to remember it so does it really matter or, if you cant remember it, is it even relevant?

    • That's a pretty good question, can't wait to see Preity's take on this. I think it's better to become enlightened no matter what your religion is, and to essentially figure out and work on yourself to put it in perspective.
Love reading all this stuff myself.

      • Hi Danika and Vitaly
I am sorry, was changing flats (like we change bodies ;)) and didnt get so much time to check the comments. Danika your question is really excellent and that shows how you really believe that there is more to our existence than just living and die. This s defintely not our first visit and neither the last. we are eternal; there was never a time when we were not existing in one form or another. Because of material conditioning, we have memories that are very short lived. What to say about last life, if someone asks us what we ate this day last week for dinner, we wont be able to answer it.
Another example, there was a time when we were 1 day old baby, and then 1 year old and so on..we know that we were that young some years back, but we wont be able to remember how did it feel like..isnt it? similarly there was a past life and lives, but we have forgotten them, but impressions are there in mind from every birth, because we carry our subtle body made up of mind, intelligence and ego to our next births also. Only the gross body changes.
But sometimes that Supreme Lord make someone remembers his past life, to make the faith of beleivers more stronger. There are many many cases of reincarnation that have been verified also.
Whether we get more enlightened in this birth, or we become more ignorant would depend on our activities in this birth. If you are situated in mode of goodness in this birth, you would start to see the world as it is and if one is involved in mode of ignorance, than he would become more ignorant and this ignorance would be carried to his next birth,
I will soon write a post on 3 different modes of nature, so stay tuned.
Thanks for reading the post and showing interest :)

  3. Thats is pretty deep stuff, on a soul level. Thanks for sharing your insights as I am inspired by this and pt 1 togethere makes these posts a must read!

Reincarnation is a science too, though very subtle…
please stay tuned, it would be nice to hear from you again.

  5. Interesting read indeed, definitely look forward to seeing you around more.

  6. I definitely believe in reincarnation and I also agree with you that we are our souls. I took a class not long ago and learned how to speak to my guides. I later found out that I did have a past life and the guide that has been with me since birth knew me in my other life. I was a woman who lived in the early 1800's. I found it so very interesting to learn my story and I'm sure there's plenty more that I'm not yet aware of. I do find this topic very interesting as well so will look forward to your next post as well.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    • Nice to see you again Adrienne, it's pretty cool to see that you have actually experienced that type of connection with your guides. I'm a big fan of all this stuff myself.

    • Hi Adrienne
I am very happy hear to you have already studied about it and even know something about your past life. Knowing that reincarnation is a truth, the next intelligent step is to learn how to stop this cycle of birth and death – it is quite painful indeed. And then there is always a danger of falling down into animal species (of course this would be determined by our activities as humans)..
stay tuned as I am in learning process too and when I learn something, i love to share it with others :)

  7. Thanks for commenting on all of this Preity, definitely interesting!
I have actually came across this site a while ago – Spiritual Science Research Foundation that has been around for a long time. – definitely worth checking out.

  8. I am not yet a believer of this reincarnation , but I love reading this post as it gives me enough info about it.

  9. I think you've really caught the issue for a lot of people who seek happiness in the wrong places. So few people are really at peace and are looking for it in drugs, alcohol, their careers or unhappy marriages when the peace really comes from within.

Thank you very much for sharing your beliefs with us!

  10. I do believe in reincarnation but I don't have better explanations or proofs to absolutely convince myself. But like what I usually seen on tv, there are lots of unusual procedures to at least discover what you are in past life or what you'll be in your future life. I want to experience that so I could really know myself much better.
