In last post we talked about reincarnation, and the post also contained 2 links to a video about a child who remembers that he was a soldier in his last life and died during world war in an air crash. Hope, some of you would have taken some time out to look at this very interesting video, which for open minded people; is a prove enough that we are born again and death is nothing but a change – the change of body.
Now we take our discussion further from there. If you think you believe in reincarnation, then you would have to accept the existence of soul, the indestructible entity; and once you accept the existence of soul, you will start appreciating the supersoul more and more. But it would be next step of course. In this post, we will focus on the existence of soul. Remember, only a person with open mind can appreciate these topics. So I request everyone reading this to remain open minded so that you can appreciate the point I am trying to make here.
I remember a very interesting incident, which happened some years back. A great saintly person from the East who was travelling to Western world on a preaching mission once had his program in a school. During his discourse he came to the topic that how we are different from this body. He called one of the students, and pointing to his arm he asked: what is this? The boy innocently answered, “this is my arm”. The saint said, so this is your arm, and then he pointed towards his leg, and asked “what is this”, and boy again answered, “this is my leg”. This way he kept asking him about different parts of his body and then he finally pointed to his body and asked, “what is this?”, and the boy said, “this is my body”. Now the saint raised this question, so this is your arm, this is your leg, these are your eyes, and finally this is your body, but who are you? You say this is your body; that means the body belongs to you, but then who is the owner? The boy didn’t have an answer. As a matter of fact, if we think carefully, none of us would be able to answer this question.
Some people say that we are not this body, but we are the mind. If it was true, and we were the mind – then we should have been in the control. Then why does the mind control us? And mind controls whom? We just said that we are the owner of the body but not the body itself, and we are also not the mind, then who we are? We are actually a soul, the most conscious entity. The body works because of the presence of soul. When the soul leaves the body, it dies. When we say the body is dead, the body is still present; it has eyes but it cannot see; similarly it has ears, but it cannot hear and it has all other limbs, but none of them can function anymore. Why were they functioning few minutes back, but are not functioning anymore?
We can compare the body to be a car. When a car is moving, it means that there is a driver. He might not be visible because of dark windows, but any person who has intelligence will know that if car is moving that means it has a driver. Only a small child, who has yet to develop this intelligence, will think that the car is moving on its own.
Thus, when we see a body moving and working, we can understand that there is a driver inside in the form of soul and when the driver leaves, the body would be dead.
To quote one verse from Bhagavad Gita, the holiest book for Hindus, “The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.”
We will continue about the nature of the soul in next post.
